What Would Jesus Do in this Crazy World?

I usually do not spend a lot of time on social commentary. It seems to me that the world is crazy. It always has been and it always will be. Recently, however, I was watching a news show about “Religion and Ethics”. On it a man commented about “the radical love of God” and how we as the church need to begin to show it to everyone. Now I must tell you that I agree completely. In the midst of a world gone crazy, God’s love is the ONLY thing that will help and it is the ONLY hope we have.

1 John 4:7-12 (NIV)
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

Some quick highlights …

  1. We need to love each other (Vs 7) – Pretty simple. Even when you understand that “agape” love isn’t exactly the feel good stuff of the world today, it’s easy to see that we are called to be good to those we live with on this crazy planet.
  2. If you’re not loving, you’re not Godly (Vs 8) – Again, not tough to see here. Model the love, respect and mercy of God and you are doing the right thing.
  3. God is love (Vs 9) – Yes He is. Don’t forget He is also wrath, jealousy, anger, grace, mercy, etc, etc…He is ALL that. It’s a package deal.
  4. God modeled His love to us…So we should model it to others (Vs 10-12) – Again, not hard to see here.

So why do I bring all this up? Because the same day I saw this show I read a great blog put out by a pastor’s wife about the “bathroom” fiasco our nation seems to be faced with. (Let me just say that we should be glad we HAVE bathrooms…People should get out more) The combination of the two topics made me ponder what Jesus would do. I believe the answer is a little later in first John. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE READ SCRIPTURE IN CONTEXT. After discussing that God is love and we should love each other, John says this…

1 John 5:2 (NIV)
2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.

Immediately after telling us to love each other, John reminds us to of the MOST IMPORTANT FACT.

We cannot take our definition of “love” and plug it into God’s commands.

All of what God tells us to do, all of what He thinks, all that we understand from Him, about Him and about each other, MUST take into consideration EVERYTHING He said to us. God is not on the side of an issue. HE IS ABOVE ALL THE ISSUES. Our responses need to be HIS responses. It is that simple.

So what would Jesus do in this crazy world? He would love the people. He would love the church AND the people who didn’t come to church. He would love the Muslims. He would even love the people who were not sure which bathroom they should use. He would love everybody! Then He would GENTLY, KINDLY and SUCCINCTLY explain to them what God wants for them and how they could find it. Some would follow, some would not. Then He would do the same thing all over again.

Simply put, we can NEVER compromise on what God says to do, be, feel and believe. But we should also NEVER make the mistake of thinking that ANGER or HATE will accomplish God’s goals. When you were a sinner, God loved you. Sharing that LOVE is the only way to accomplish God’s will.

See you Sunday.
